Fatwa No. ( 20009 )
Q: I inform you that I broke my fast for one day in the month of Ramadan due to an illness that afflicted me, and I made up that day. At ten o'clock, guests came to our home, so I broke my fast believing that fasting this day was like voluntary fasting . In one of the gatherings, I heard that I am sinful for this action, and the caller instructed us to ask your Eminence. I hope from Allah, then from you, to clarify the ruling on what I did, and what is obligatory for me to do by way of expiation or otherwise. May Allah preserve you.
A: If one begins a fast that is obligatory upon him, such as making up Ramadan or any other obligatory fast, like a vow or an expiation for an oath, it is forbidden for him to break the fast during the day or to exit it without a valid legal excuse. This is because beginning an obligatory fast obligates its completion except for a valid legal excuse. If he violates this and breaks the fast in the middle of the day without a valid legal excuse, there is no expiation upon him, but he must make up the days he invalidated, whether he broke them with a valid legal excuse or invalidated them without a valid legal excuse. However, he is sinful for breaking the obligatory fast without an excuse, and he must repent, seek forgiveness, and not return to such a bad action.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
