The Sacrifice for a Newborn According to One’s Ability
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 16356 )
Q1: I traveled from Egypt to Saudi Arabia on the seventh day after the birth of my son. Due to financial hardship, the many debts I owed, and the tightness of time, I did not perform the sacrifice for him. That was several months ago. Now, by the grace of my Lord, Mighty and Majestic, I am in a state of blessing and ease, and I am able to perform it. I have left my wife and son in Egypt. Should I send them money to have it performed in Egypt? Or is it permissible for me to delay it until I return and take charge of it myself? I know that my family would be pleased if I were present for the sacrifice, and perhaps my mother would feel some discomfort if I sent them to have it performed in my absence?
A: The sacrifice for a newborn is a recommended practice (sunnah) for one who is able to afford it, and it is prescribed to hasten it on the seventh day or thereafter. Whether you slaughter it in your country or in another country, all of this is permissible. Pleasing your mother is required, and indeed that is part of dutifulness to parents. Therefore, there is no blame on you for delaying it until your return in order to please your mother. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
