The second question of Fatwa number ( 16045 )
Q2: If the father does not have a sheep for the 'aqiqah, is it sufficient to slaughter a rooster or a duck ? And is it obligatory to give in charity the weight of the newborn's hair, or not?
A2: The 'aqiqah for a newborn is a recommended practice (sunnah) and not obligatory. It is recommended to slaughter two sheep for a male child and one sheep for a female child; based on the hadith of Umm Karaz, who asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the 'aqiqah, and he said:Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 15:12. It was narrated by Ahmad and al-Tirmidhi , and he graded it as authentic. A rooster and a duck do not suffice for it. It is recommended to shave the head of the male newborn on his seventh day. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
