Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 14163 )
Q: IfI have a daughter who is 11 years old, and fasting is obligatory for her this year. She is ill, suffering from convulsions, and uses medication daily. If she stops it, the illness returns to her. Does she fast this year or not? ؟
A: If this girl has not reached puberty, fasting is not obligatory for her; because at that time she is not accountable; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The pen has been lifted from threeرفع القلم عن ثلاثة..
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1423Hasan (Darussalam)
and among them is the child until he reaches puberty. And if she has reached puberty but is unable to fast, then she breaks her fast, and she makes up the fasts when she is able. If the illness is continuous and its cure is not expected, then she feeds one poor person for each day only; due to the saying of Allah the Exalted:
So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] - then an equal number of days [are to be made up]. And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor personفَمَنْ كَانَ مِنْكُمْ مَرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ وَعَلَى الَّذِينَ يُطِيقُونَهُ فِدْيَةٌ طَعَامُ مِسْكِينٍ
[Al-Baqarah 2:184]
, and the amount of feeding the poor person is half a
sa' of rice, wheat, or the like of the country's staple food for each day. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
