Fasting of the sick person who is unable to fast and whose illness is not expected to end
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 18832 )
Q: My wife is seventeen years old. She has a blood deficiency, and the doctor has warned her against fasting. She has three Ramadans for which she has not fasted, except for a little, and she is unable to make up the missed days. Whenever she makes up two or three days, it leads to her being hospitalized, and the doctor has warned her against that. Since her body is frail, I ask you to inform us of what is obligatory for her. May Allah reward you.
A: If the situation is as described, then fasting is not obligatory for your wife. Rather, it is obligatory for her to feed one poor person for every day, the amount being one and a half kilograms of food for each day. This is based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:184], meaning: It is obligatory for those who are unable to fast due to a chronic illness or old age to provide food for a poor person for every day. This is how Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and a group of the Salaf interpreted it. And if she is cured and becomes able to fast in the future, it becomes obligatory for her to fast.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
