Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 15426 )
Q: My wife is suffering from diabetes, which sometimes reaches the point of fainting. The doctors overseeing her treatment, who are two Muslim female doctors, have determined that she is unable to fast, and likewise unable to perform Hajj . Your Eminence, the Shaykh: My wife was unable to fast last Ramadan due to her illness, and also due to her pregnancy, after which she miscarried. The question: What is the ruling regarding her inability to fast, and also after her miscarriage? And what is the ruling regarding her inability to perform Hajj? Please note that she has not yet performed the obligatory Hajj. Also, Your Eminence, the Shaykh: My wife is currently pregnant, and it is expected that she will give birth in the latter part of Sha'ban. What is the ruling regarding this year's Ramadan? The doctors overseeing her treatment continue to order her not to fast until an indefinite time. Please issue a ruling, may Allah reward you, and may Allah reward you with good.
A: First: If the condition of your sick wife is as described, then she must feed a poor person for each day, the amount being half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of the staple food of the country.
Second: If she is unable to perform Hajj herself, then she must appoint a proxy to perform Hajj on her behalf, the Hajj of Islam, and to perform 'Umrah. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
