Fasting of the Kidney Patient
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 17193 )
Q: I am informing you that I am a lady, thirty-eight years old, with five children: three boys and two girls. My eldest child is studying in university, and the others are from primary to intermediate school. Therefore, I am informing Your Eminence that I have been suffering from kidney inflammation for ten years and have been taking medication. During this period, I underwent a tie (ligation) with my husband's consent. As time passed, the disease worsened, the kidneys became non-functional, and I began dialysis twice a week. In the month of Sha'ban of the year 1414 AH, Allah blessed me, and my brother donated a kidney to me, and the transplant was successful by the will of Allah. However, at this time, after the transplant, I am still taking medication, and the doctor has forbidden me from fasting. Therefore, I ask Allah, then Your Eminence, to issue a ruling to me regarding what is required of me in terms of making up the fasts or feeding the poor. Please note that the doctor who forbade me from fasting is of Sudanese nationality and his religion is Islam. May Allah protect you and guide your steps on the path of good. Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings.
A: If you are unable to fast due to your illness, or if you fear that your recovery will be delayed, then you should break your fast and make up the days of fasting after Allah heals you and you are able to make them up. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
