Making up the days fasted due to chronic illness

Fatwa number ( 19306 )
Q: My father was admitted to the intensive care unit at the hospital at the beginning of the blessed month of Ramadan in 1416 AH, due to a heart condition and kidney inflammation resulting from fluctuations in his blood sugar levels. He spent the first four days in a state of near-coma, and the rest of the days in a slightly better condition. He was discharged a few days before the festival, as his condition had improved relatively, although the illness remained and he continued the treatment that the doctors required him to take at that time. He was taking pills for diabetes, blood pressure, strengthening the heart muscle, and removing fluids from the body in three doses throughout the day and night: morning, noon, and night. In that state, he did not fast except for four days from the beginning of the month, and he broke his fast for the rest of the month. Before the blessed month of Ramadan in 1417 AH, he brought out two bags of rice, each weighing (45) forty-five kilograms,
and he gave them in charity to two poor families. In Ramadan of this year, 1417 AH, he did not fast, as the doctors forbade him from fasting, so he broke his fast for all the days of the month. After the festival, he also brought out two bags of rice, which a trustworthy person distributed to the poor and needy he knew. However, he wants to be reassured and to know the religious ruling and what he should do in detail from your eminence specifically. May Allah reward you with a great reward and recompense.
A: If your father is unable to make up the days he did not fast due to chronic illness, he must feed one poor person for each day with a quantity of one and a half kilograms of food, which can be given to one poor person or several poor people. This feeding takes the place of making up the fasts; for Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Baqarah 2:184] So whatever you give beyond the obligatory amount is voluntary charity. However, if his recovery is expected and he is able to make up the fasts, he should wait until he is able and then make up what he owes. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
