Explaining the means of preserving the self from desires and trials

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q252: The questioner, Saleh from Jeddah, asks: How do I preserve my self from desires and trials?
A252: It is Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, who preserves. He the Exalted said:
He said, "Should I entrust you with him except [under coercion] as I entrusted you with his brother before? But Allah is the best guardian, and He is the most merciful of the merciful."
[Yusuf 12:64]
, but the person performs the means by which Allah preserves him. Among these is that he supplicates to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and increases in supplication that Allah will protect and preserve him, and make disobedience, open sinfulness, rebellion, and disbelief hateful to him, and make obedience and faith beloved to him. This is the greatest of the means, which is supplication.
Second: He must keep the company of, or sit with, or mix with the righteous, who help him to adhere to the obedience of Allah and to stay away from what Allah has forbidden. He must avoid mixing with and accompanying the wicked, the foolish, and the open sinners; for they drag him into evil. He must also lower his gaze from what is forbidden, restrain his hearing from listening to what is forbidden, and restrain his tongue from speaking what is forbidden. These are great means for protecting the Muslim in his religion, his honor, and his creed.
