The questioner : His first question says: We performed the obligatory Hajj last year, I and some of my colleagues, and the intention in entering the state of ihram was for tamattu' (combining 'Umrah and Hajj with a break between them), but what happened is that after we performed the tawaf (circumambulation of the Ka'bah) and sa'y (walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah) of 'Umrah, we did not exit our state of ihram, nor did we shorten or shave our hair, but we continued in our state of ihram until we slaughtered the hady (the sacrificial animal of the pilgrimage), and then we removed our ihram. Is our Hajj valid in this form, or is it obligatory for us to do something? Please guide us, may Allah reward you with good?

The Shaykh : It is obligatory for you, indeed it is obligatory for you to know that if a person enters the state of ihram as a mutamatti' (one combining 'Umrah and Hajj with a break between them), then when he performs tawaf (circumambulation of the Ka'bah) and sa'y (walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah), he must shorten his hair from the entire head and exit his state of ihram; this is the obligatory (wajib) act. If you continued in your state of ihram, and if you had intended Hajj before you began the tawaf, meaning the tawaf of 'Umrah, then there is no blame on you; you would be a muqarin (one combining 'Umrah and Hajj in one ihram), and the hady (the sacrificial animal of the pilgrimage) you performed would be for the qiran (combining 'Umrah and Hajj in one ihram). However, if you remained with the intention of 'Umrah until you performed tawaf and sa'y, then many of the scholars of knowledge say that your ihram for Hajj is not valid, because it is not permissible to enter Hajj into 'Umrah after beginning its tawaf. Some scholars of knowledge hold that there is no harm in it. And since you were ignorant in this situation, I see that nothing is required of you and that your Hajj is valid, if Allah wills.

The questioner : He has a second question, but it does not relate to Hajj.
