Types of Ihram

Fatwa No. ( 5229 )
Q: I have read many books about the rituals of Hajj, and my knowledge of the rituals is nearly sufficient. However, I still find myself unable to distinguish the correct ruling from others in some matters due to the conflicting opinions of scholars and jurists. For example, regarding (ifrad) with the intention of Hajj, one opinion states: (no sacrificial animal is required), while another states: (a sacrificial animal is required). Which of these two opinions should I follow and which should I leave? I have not read a single comprehensive book on Hajj, or on how the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) performed Hajj. I hope you will clarify this in a simple and clear manner, and may Allah reward you with good. This is based on
the Book and the authentic Sunnah. Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings.
A: There are three types of ihram: First: Ihram for Hajj only, and one who performs Hajj as an ifrad is not obligated to offer a sacrificial animal. Second: Ihram for both Hajj and 'Umrah together, which is called qiran, and is also called tamattu'. One who performs qiran is obligated to offer a sacrificial animal. Third: Ihram for 'Umrah during the months of Hajj, then exiting the state of ihram, and then performing Hajj in the same year. One who does this is called a mutamatti', and he is obligated to offer a sacrificial animal. If he does not find a sacrificial animal, he must fast for three days during Hajj and seven days when he returns to his homeland or place of residence. The best of the three types of worship is: Tamattu' with 'Umrah to Hajj. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
