The practice of exposing the right shoulder during tawaf
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first and second questions of Fatwa No. ( 17953 )
Q1: Is exposing the right shoulder during tawaf a recommended practice, and what is required of one who forgot to
expose his right shoulder? Is kissing the Black Stone sufficient in place of saying: "In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest"? And what is required of one who left off this phrase and was content with kissing the Stone while forgetting, then remembered it after he had moved away from the Stone's location and said it while heading toward the Station of Ibrahim?
A1 : Exposing the right shoulder is placing the middle of the pilgrim's cloak under his right armpit and its ends over his left shoulder, so that his right shoulder and upper arm are uncovered. It is a recommended practice in the first tawaf when one arrives in Makkah , which is the tawaf of 'Umrah for the one performing tamattu', or the tawaf of arrival for the one performing qiran or ifrad. If one leaves it off, he owes nothing. And nothing is required of one who leaves off the takbir and the bismillah at the beginning of the tawaf; because the takbir, dhikr, and du'a' in the tawaf and the sa'y are all a recommended practice and not obligatory. The only obligatory thing is that he perform the tawaf with an intention and the sa'y with an intention from the beginning of the tawaf and the sa'y.
