Determining the Nisab of Zakah in Foreign Currency
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 17276 )
Q: I request the determination of the nisab of zakah in foreign currency – the French franc – for the year 1415 AH, corresponding to 1994 CE.
A: The nisab of zakah for currency other than gold is the value of one hundred and forty mithqals of silver or more in any currency. If the currency reaches the value of this amount or more, zakah becomes obligatory upon it after the completion of a lunar year of possession. If it falls short of this amount, there is no zakah due on it, unless it is combined with other zakatable wealth, such as currency or the value of commercial goods, in which case it is zakatized together with it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
