The ruling on abandoning the means or clinging to them
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q111: The questioner asks: What is the ruling on abandoning the means in this world? And what is the ruling on clinging to them?
A111: Neither of the two is permissible: neither abandoning the means, nor
clinging to them; for Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, has commanded the adoption of the means, and the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) used to adopt the means. However, one must have reliance upon Allah alongside adopting the means, so one does not depend on the means. For this reason, the Salaf said: depending on the means is shirk (associating partners with Allah), and abandoning the means is a defect in the creed. The correct course is to combine the two: doing the means while having reliance upon Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He.
