The ruling on one who abandons the means in the name of reliance upon Allah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Q: What is said about people who come to the mosque and say, “We rely upon Allah,” but they do not act upon the means? He said: Rather, you rely upon people?

Answer:
He is truthful, as it is reported that some people used to come from Yemen without bringing any provisions. They would come like this, asking people for help. When they were told to do so, they said, “We are the ones who rely upon Allah!” Some of the Companions said to them, “Rather, you are the ones who feed yourselves [from others].” This is of that nature; the one who neglects the means is not one who relies upon Allah, but rather he places his burden upon people until he asks them and harms them. We ask Allah for well-being.
