Writing verses on informational signs

Fatwa No. ( 21721 )
Praise be to Allah alone, and peace and blessings be upon the one after whom there is no prophet,
After greetings: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from the questioner, His Excellency the Mayor of the Province of Tabuk : Abdullah ibn Muslim al-Sharari , which was referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars with number (5873) and date 22/9/1421 AH. The questioner asked a question, the text of which is as follows: I present to your Eminence that there are welcome signs at the entrance of the Province of Tabuk , with a width of no less than twenty meters, and these signs are located on main roads. We have a desire to write some Qur'anic verses on those signs or boards, for example: ("Go on and glorify Allah"), because of the peace of mind it brings to those who read it, and the return to every virtue, in that if one is driving his car, the remembrance of Allah must surely curb his recklessness, if Allah wills. And I see in it what I do not see in the phrase ("Oh Papa, do not speed, we are waiting for you"). I also wish to write part of the Qur'anic verse:
My Lord, make this a secure city and provide its people with fruitsرَبِّ اجْعَلْ هَذَا بَلَدًا آمِنًا وَارْزُقْ أَهْلَهُ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ
[Al-Baqarah 2:126]
. I ask your Eminence to inform me of the permissibility or impermissibility of this.

After studying the inquiry, the Committee responded that it is not permissible to write Qur'anic verses or phrases containing the remembrance of Allah on informational signs placed on roads or at city entrances; because of the exposure of such signs to desecration, harm, and tampering, with the passage of time, or their falling down, or their being discarded,
it is necessary to keep the verses of Allah, or anything containing His remembrance, pure, and to direct that to what Allah has commanded His servants to do, namely worshipping Him through His remembrance, reciting His verses and reflecting on their meanings, and taking admonition from them. There is no harm in writing informational phrases that are free of this, which encourage drivers and passersby to be cautious and patient, and not to speed or be reckless, or to harass people, and other matters that help in preserving lives and their safety. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
