The Charity Society’s Agency in Disbursing Zakah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first, second, and third questions from Fatwa No. ( 16770 )
Q1: Are the well-known charitable societies today, which collect zakah and voluntary charity from benefactors and distribute it to those in need, considered agents on behalf of the benefactor or on behalf of the needy? And are they permitted to choose what they deem best for the needy, such as purchasing food items or clothing, for example, with the amount allocated for the needy?
A1 : a- The society is considered an agent on behalf of the one who pays the zakah, not an agent on behalf of the poor person.
b- The society is not permitted to dispose of the zakah; rather, it must pay it to the poor person as it is. As for voluntary charity, it may choose what it deems best for the poor person if the one who gives the charity has authorized it to do so.
