Fatwa No. ( 20026 )
Q: I am a farmer and I obtain a considerable agricultural yield, which may reach from sixty to one hundred bags of corn. A bag may reach twenty sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg). I have been accustomed to paying the zakah of this harvest at the time of its harvest, but I was surprised by the emergence of a committee that tasked me with paying the zakah for five past years. I paid it a second time, and I am forgiving, but my desire is to pay the zakah at the time of harvest, fearing that I might die and the zakah remains upon me; because the grains after six months are exposed to weakness and spoilage, especially if they are exposed to rain. Knowing that the committee tasked with assessing the zakah is delayed from its scheduled time, and its delay may reach five years. Please give us a ruling, may Allah reward you.
A : It is obligatory for you to pay the zakah to the committee tasked with collecting it by the one in authority. If the time for receiving it from you is delayed and you fear its spoilage or defect, then you contact the judge in your area, and he will look into what is best, if Allah wills. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
