Q1: My father and my uncle (may Allah have mercy on him), before my uncle passed away, owned several pieces of land. Then they decided to divide this land into small plots and sell them. They actually began this project, and the sale continued with them in this manner for several years. Some of the plots remained for a lunar year, two lunar years, or more, and they were offered for sale but not sold. They did not pay zakah on the value of these lands offered for sale when a lunar year, two lunar years, or more had passed, either at the end of the lunar year or at the time of sale, out of their ignorance of how to pay the zakah of trade goods. Now, what is obligatory for my father, who is still alive, and for my uncle’s sons, upon whom may Allah have mercy? And after my father and my uncle separated from the partnership that was between them during his lifetime, and after they sold most of these lands and only a little remained, and they

A1 : It is obligatory to pay the zakah of the past years, and you must seek what is most purifying for the conscience of the living and the deceased. We ask Allah for pardon and well-being for everyone in this world and the Hereafter. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
