Q: The Islamic University in ( Dhaka – Bangladesh ) is an Islamic religious institution that serves knowledge and creed on the methodology of the people of the Sunnah and the community, and on the way of the righteous Salaf. It provides for the children of Muslims who are orphans, the poor, and the destitute by securing their housing, living expenses, textbooks, and other costs. Is it permissible for the wealthy, both outside and inside the country, to spend their obligatory alms on them?
A: It is permissible to distribute zakah to poor students, orphans and others, to secure their housing, clothing, and sustenance; because they are among the recipients of zakah mentioned in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needyإِنَّمَا الصَّدَقَاتُ لِلْفُقَرَاءِ وَالْمَسَاكِينِ
[At-Tawbah 9:60]

... the verse. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
