Studying in a Mixed Institution

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 20273 )
Q: I am a student in the Faculty of Pharmacy (at the University of Annaba ) in Algeria, this is the faculty where I am pursuing my studies. The immodest display of adornment has reached its peak there, and licentiousness has reached its zenith, as if we are living in European or American societies. Since the Shari'ah commands us to preserve our religion, I am suffering greatly from this blatant immodesty, because a person, by nature of his weakness, is affected by such appearances. Another matter is that I have come to dislike and grow weary of studying in this faculty, and I wanted to leave it and transfer to the Faculty of Shari'ah (in the city ofConstantine) to study religious knowledge, but my parents prevented me from doing so and refused to let me leave the Faculty of Pharmacy. So, O honorable Shaykhs (may Allah preserve you), please issue a ruling on my case: should I leave studying in this faculty? Please note that before I wrote these lines to you, I intended to leave the studies, but I feared that I would fall into something more dangerous than this, which is undutifulness to parents. So I ask you to issue a ruling on this matter, for I am in great confusion and much anxiety.
A: We see that you should enroll in the Faculty of Shari'ah in order to learn the matters of
your religion and in order to stay away from evil. And whoever leaves something for the sake of Allah, Allah replaces it with something better. Do not obey your father in remaining in the mixed studies, for there is no obedience to a created being in disobedience to the Creator. We advise you to care for your parents and be dutiful to them as much as you can, and to address them with gentleness and softness. May Allah help you with all good, and guide you and your parents to all that pleases Him. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
