Questions 38 and 39 from Fatwa No. ( 12087 )
Q 38: Is mixed-gender education permissible?
A 38: The mixing of male and female students, and of male and female teachers, in educational institutions is forbidden; because of the fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) it leads to, the arousal of desire, and the occurrence of lewdness. The sin is multiplied and the crime is made greater if the female teachers or students expose any part of their 'awrah (the part of the body that must be covered), or wear transparent clothes that reveal what is beneath them, or wear tight clothes that outline their body parts, or if they flirt with the male students or teachers and joke with them, or anything else that leads to the violation of sanctities and chaos regarding honor.
