Naming with the Al-Ka'ila Surname

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 18740 )
Q: We inform you that I and my cousin:
(Muhammad) bear the surname: (Al-Ka'ila). Since I have heard from some shaykhs, Ibrahim al-Khudayri and Nasser al-Sayhi, that this surname is disliked; therefore, we request your ruling on this matter, as I wish to change it to the surname: (Al-Hadi), which is already present in my family?

A: The word (Ka'ila) indicates despicable and bad traits, which souls find repulsive and natures reject; such as cowardice, blackness, shortness, filth, excrement, stinginess, and the like, as mentioned by the author of al-Qamus and others. If you wish to change your surname from (Al-Ka'ila) to (Al-Hadi), which is the name of one of your ancestors, there is no harm in that after completing the official procedures in the Civil Affairs Department. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
