The first question of Fatwa No. ( 17325 )
Praise be to Allah alone, and may blessings and peace be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. And after: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from His Excellency the Assistant President of the Qunfudhah Courts and the President of the Da'wah and Hisbah, with reference number (733) and date 24/8/1415 AH, and referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars with reference number (3488) and date 13/8/1415 AH. His Excellency asked a question, the text of which is as follows: I submit to Your Eminence that it is common among the people of this town and the coastal region to name their women "Nubiyyah." Since the origin of this naming is the belief in other than Allah (Mighty and Majestic), in that a group called "al-Sadah" (the nobles) were believed by the people to benefit and harm without Allah the Exalted, this is undoubtedly major shirk (associating partners with Allah) that expels one from the religion. These people name their females "Nubiyyah" to mislead the ignorant. This matter has ceased, praise be to Allah, but the name remains. I hope
for Your Eminence to issue a fatwa on this matter, as advice to Allah and His Messenger.
After studying the inquiry, the Committee answered: It is not permissible to name a woman "Nubiyyah," nor is it permissible to name a man "Nabi" (prophet); because the legal usage of this title is specific to the prophets and messengers of Allah (peace and blessings be upon them), and Allah has sealed them with His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), as He the Exalted said:[Al-Ahzab 33:40] . And if a woman is found with this name (Nubiyyah), it is obligatory to change it to another, such as Nubiyyah or Safiyyah or others. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
