Fatwa No. ( 3293 )
Q: I am the legal guardian of my brother, who traveled abroad to prepare for his master's degree. He gave me a sum of money to distribute to the poor. After a full year of his absence, he entrusted me with paying the zakat on the money in my possession as a trust. When the second lunar year came, he entrusted me with it again. The total amount reached approximately five thousand Saudi riyals. In this year, during the blessed month of Ramadan, 1400 AH, my circumstances improved, praise be to Allah, and I distributed the amount. I request your Excellency to kindly issue a ruling and guide me: is an expiation required of me for this, or is there anything else that would please Allah the Mighty and Majestic? I await what issues from your Excellency. May Allah reward you with good for me.
A: You have erred and done wrong in delaying the distribution of the amount for which you were entrusted for the entire period mentioned. Since you have distributed it to those entitled to it, there is no expiation upon you, nor anything else, except repentance, seeking forgiveness, not returning to such an action, and regretting what has passed. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
