Fatwa No. ( 21599 )
Praise be to Allah alone, and peace and blessings be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. And after that:
The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from the questioner: the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Charitable Society for the Prevention of Smoking, which was referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars with number (4051) and date 11/7/1421 AH. The questioner asked a question, the text of which is as follows: Since the scriptural evidence forbids smoking and trading in it due to the religious, health, economic, social, and other harms involved, and given that dealing with tobacco has taken on various forms in the current time, such as: its cultivation, manufacturing, transportation, import, export, marketing and distribution to commercial establishments, advertising for it and promoting it through announcements in (satellite channels, and incoming newspapers and magazines, and the use of clothing bearing the logos of tobacco companies), and the support of tobacco companies for some cultural and sports activities and competitions. And since the Charitable Society for the Prevention of Smoking in the Kingdom has efforts in raising community awareness about the harms of smoking and helping smokers quit the habit of smoking, many of those who visit the Society to benefit from its services ask about the legal ruling regarding the money earned by those who work in one of the activities and fields mentioned above, and who do not smoke or trade in it, but rather
receive their salaries and rewards as a result of their work in fields related to tobacco, particularly the field of advertising and promotion for it. We requested from Your Eminence to know the legal ruling from the Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta. May Allah reward you with good for your noble effort, and may He reward you for your work
.

After the Committee studied the inquiry, it answered that it is not permissible to work in tobacco manufacturing, marketing, and advertising companies, and the salary resulting from this work is forbidden; because it is from cooperating in sin and aggression. Therefore, whoever does that must repent to Allah, leave this work, and seek lawful earnings,
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect.وَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا (2) وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لاَ يَحْتَسِبُ
[At-Talaq 65:2-3]
. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
