Praise be to Allah alone, and may prayers and peace be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. Then, the Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from the questioner:Muhammad al-Mas Bashir al-Farhanthe supervisor of the branch of the Society for Charityin al-'Arayja,and referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars, with number (1055) and date 18/2/1421 AH. The questioner asked a question, the text of which is: We inform Your Eminence that the branch of the Society for Charityin RiyadhIt has many activities, one of which is the sponsorship of orphans. This takes several forms, one of which is that the sponsor provides a monthly amount while the orphan remains with his mother, who has custody of him. This monthly amount, which is (two hundred riyals), is given to be spent on this orphan. Does this count as sponsorship, and should we continue to accept and distribute it? It is known that orphans in this country generally live with their relatives: their grandfather, their maternal uncle, the husband's family, or the wife's family, and the person responsible for this orphan is given a monthly amount. Does this count as sponsorship for the doer of good who pays the amount? Sometimes the amount is delayed or does not arrive.
his guardian except after several months, he receives this amount in one lump sum, such as for four or five months. Is this also considered guardianship or not? And should we continue with guardianships in this manner or not? And what do you advise us? Please inform us, may you be rewarded and thanked, may Allah preserve you, guide you, and bless your efforts and benefit people through you.

After the Committee’s study of the question, it answered as follows: The methods and means you mentioned regarding how to spend on the orphan and provide guardianship for him, we hope that those who contribute to them are among those who are included in the reward and recompense mentioned in the virtue of guardianship of orphans and their care. We advise you to fear Allah the Exalted, to be diligent in delivering alms to those who are entitled to them, and to continue in this good work. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
