The eighth question of Fatwa No. ( 14893 )
Q8: I found a sum of money in a certain place, and I asked the people present in that place, and it did not belong to them. Is it permissible to dispose of it, and is it lawful?
A8: It is obligatory to announce it in public gatherings continuously for one year, in the place where it may be. If no one comes forward, write down the description of this sum and the type of its bag, if it is inside a bag, then keep its description with you and dispose of this sum. If its owner comes after that, even after a long time, and describes it, pay it to him. If you have given it in charity, inform him that you gave it in charity; if he is satisfied, otherwise pay him the sum, and the charity is yours. Except if the sum you found is small, in which case it is not obligatory to announce it, or if it was in the Makkah Haram , in which case it is paid to the competent authority. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
