Fatwa number ( 18901 )
Q: My brother and I, when we were eleven and thirteen years old, went down to the market to buy some items. We found a sum of ten thousand riyals (10,000) in a bag with some dust thrown over it. We took the bag and put it with our items, and we gave the money to our father. Knowing that our father is old, illiterate, and from the older generation, and that at that time there were no preachers explaining what is lawful and what is forbidden, and we were in villages, not in a city. Is there a sin on us and on our father, O honorable Shaykh? Guide us, may Allah reward you.
A: It was obligatory for you, when you found the aforementioned bag, to identify its marks and announce it for a period of one year in the places where its owner might be found. Since you did not do so, and a long time has passed since you found it, making it impossible to find its owner, it is obligatory for you to give the money in charity with the intention that the reward belongs to its owner, along with repenting to Allah for what happened, and avoiding such an action in the future. If it is possible for you to find its owner,
it is obligatory for you to search for him and hand over his money to him. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
