Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : If a man wants to marry another wife, is it a condition that he seek the permission of his first wife, and what is the ruling if he marries without her knowledge?

The Shaykh : I believe that if he sought her permission, she would refuse to let him marry.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : However, it is not a condition of the marriage contract that he seek the permission of the first wife; rather, even if he sought her permission and she refused, he has the right to marry.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : But despite this, I see that he should consult with her.

The questioner : Decency, yes.

The Shaykh : And he should convince her until she is convinced and reassured, and he should explain to her the wisdom or the reason for which he wants to marry. Then, when the new wife comes, she will come with reassurance regarding her, knowledge of her, and acceptance of her. At that time, the two wives can live a good life without discord or mutual hatred. Therefore, in order to consider these benefits, he should seek her permission and inform her. As for whether this is obligatory, it is not obligatory.

The questioner : Yes.
