Paying money to the first wife in exchange for marrying another

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa number ( 9912 )
Q1: We have a practice that we do not know whether it is a custom or an act of worship, which is when a man marries a second wife, we compel him, even by force, to give his first wife some money or gold, or a quarter of the second wife's mahr, to please her . What is the ruling on this practice? And if it is prescribed, what is the evidence?
A: If a man marries another woman in addition to his wife, it is not obligatory for him to pay money to the first wife, and it is not permissible to compel him to do so. However, this is a matter of generosity, to make her heart content and to maintain good relations. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
