The third question of Fatwa No. ( 20173 )
Q3: What is the nisab of grains and fruits, and what are the conditions for the obligation of zakah on grains and fruits ?
A3: Zakah is obligatory on all grains; such as wheat, barley, rice, lentils, and chickpeas, and other grains if they are not staple food. Zakah is also obligatory on all dates that are measured and stored. The conditions for the obligation of zakah on grains
and fruits are the following: 1- That these grains reach the nisab, which is five wasqs, equivalent to three hundred sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg). The amount of one sa' is five and a third Iraqi rital. This is indicated by what was narrated by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri , from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:Sahih Muslim 979a It was narrated by the group. 2- That the nisab be owned by its owner at the time zakah becomes obligatory. It is obligatory to pay zakah on them, and its amount is: one-tenth of what is watered without expense, half of one-tenth of what is watered with expense, and three-quarters of one-tenth of what is watered by both, if they are equal in watering. If they differ in watering, then it is based on the one with the greater benefit. It is not considered for fruits and grains that a lunar year of possession (hawl) must pass over them; rather, whenever the grain hardens and the fruit's ripeness becomes apparent, zakah becomes obligatory; due to the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Al-An'am 6:141] . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
