Zakat on vegetables, date palms, and grocery goods
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 20678 )
Q: First: I have a farm with fruit trees (mango, guava, fig, date palms) and I sell from it annually for amounts of money that I do not count, because they come in scattered installments, and I spend on the farm for fertilizer, electricity, medicine for the trees, and workers' wages. Second: I have a grocery store with monthly income. Third: I collect what remains to me from my salaries, the grocery store's income, and what I get from the farm. In the month of Ramadan, I count the available amount and I pay out one-quarter of one-tenth as zakat. Is that valid, or is it obligatory for me to pay the zakat of the farm separately, the grocery store separately, and what remains of my salary separately? And what is the due amount in the farm: is it one-quarter of one-tenth, or half of one-tenth, or one-tenth? I ask for your information, may Allah benefit the Muslim community through you.
A: First: There is no zakat on vegetables unless you sell some of them for money and a lunar year passes over the money; in that case, you pay zakat on this money if it reaches the minimum threshold (nisab) by itself or by adding it to other money.
Second: If the yield of the date palms reaches the minimum threshold (nisab) or more, which is: three hundred sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) by the Prophet's sa' (which is approximately three kilograms today), then you pay out one-tenth of it if it is watered without expense, or half of one-tenth if it is watered with expense. If you sell it, you pay zakat on its value according to the amount mentioned. Third: As for the goods in the grocery store, if a lunar year passes over their value for which you bought them, then you list these goods prepared for sale and appraise them at what they are worth at the completion of the lunar year, and you pay out one-quarter of one-tenth of their value at that time. Fourth: As for the money you have from available salaries and the estimated value of the grocery store, if a lunar year passes over it and it reaches the minimum threshold (nisab), then you pay zakat on it by paying out one-quarter of one-tenth of it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
