Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of fatwa number ( 14409 )
Q 1: What is the ruling on visiting graves on festivals and other days , and what is the ruling on reciting the Qur'an at graves , and does it reach the deceased or not; because I live in a rural area and all the people on the first day of the festival are at the graves, eating, drinking, and playing there, whereas graves, as I have heard, are for taking a lesson and knowing Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) when a person leaves this world.
A 1: Visiting graves is prescribed for two things: First: to remember the Hereafter; for his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):Musnad Ahmad 1236, 1237Sahih, because of corroborating evidence; this is a da'eef isnad because of the weakness of Ali bin Zaid and Rabee'ah bin an-Nabighah and his father are unknown], Sahih because of corroborating eviden (Darussalam) . Second: supplicating for the deceased; for it is established that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) . As for sitting at the grave, eating there, rejoicing, and playing, this is not permissible, and likewise it is not permissible to supplicate to the deceased; because he is the one most in need of supplication.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

I used to forbid you to visit the graves, but now visit them, for they remind you of the Hereafter
كنت نهيتكم عن زيارة القبور فزوروها، فإنها تذكركم بالآخرةHe used to say when he visited the graves of the Muslims in al-Baqi': Peace be upon you, people of the abode, from among the believers and Muslims, and we, if Allah wills, will be your successors. You are our predecessors and we are your followers. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you. O Allah, forgive them. O Allah, have mercy on them.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
