The Naming with the Name 'Abd al-Jalil
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: There has been much debate among the junior students among us regarding (al-Jalil) whether this name is one of the names of Allah, and whether it is permissible to name our children ( 'Abd al-Jalil ). I ask for a detailed answer to this question, mentioning the statements of the scholars and the stronger position, for we are students of knowledge who are amazed by the statements of the scholars, both past and present, just as we are amazed by the decisive statement in the issue, and may Allah reward you with good.
A: Al-Jalil is one of the names of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He); He is al-Jalil in His essence, in His names, and in His attributes, for He possesses the descriptions of majesty and the attributes of perfection. The Imam al-Hafiz Abu Bakr al-Bayhaqi said in his book (Al-Asma' wa al-Sifat): "And among them is al-Jalil, which is what has come in the athar from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the report of the names. And in the Book: (The Possessor of Majesty and Honor), and its meaning is the One who is worthy of command and prohibition. Indeed, the majesty of one among people only appears by having a binding command over others, such that they find no alternative to obeying him in it. So, if it is the right of the Creator (Glorified is His praise) over those He created that His command be
binding upon them and their obedience to Him be necessary, then the name al-Jalil is rightfully due to Him." And the Shaykh 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sa'di said in his explanation of the Nuniyyah: "And He (Glorified and Exalted is He) is al-Jalil, who has the attributes of majesty, which are the attributes of greatness and majesty, established by His right, and no attribute of majesty and perfection is lacking from Him." End of quote. There is no harm in naming children ('Abd al-Jalil).
