Q: In the last unit of the night prayer, the imam prostrated once
and forgot the second. During the tashahhud, one of the worshippers reminded him of the prostration, but the imam prostrated twice , resulting in three prostrations. What should he do before the taslim? Because the worshippers are in doubt about whether they should repeat the prayer or not?
A: It is obligatory for this imam, who forgot the second prostration of the last unit of prayer, to perform only that forgotten prostration after the worshippers reminded him during the final tashahhud. Then he performs the final tashahhud after repeating that prostration, and the tashahhud he performed before it is not counted, because the order of the actions of prayer is a pillar of the prayer. Then he performs the prostration for forgetfulness. Since the imam performed two prostrations after the worshippers reminded him of the missed prostration in the last unit, if the imam intended them to be the prostration for forgetfulness to compensate for the prostration he forgot, then his prayer and the prayer of those behind him are invalid because they missed a pillar of the prayer, which is the second prostration of the last unit. A pillar is not dropped by forgetting it or doing it intentionally, nor is it compensated for by the prostration for forgetfulness. Therefore, they must all repeat the prayer in its entirety. Similarly, if he intended those two prostrations to be a repetition of the two prostrations of the last unit and did not perform the final tashahhud after them, then his prayer and the prayer of those behind him are invalid because they missed a pillar of the prayer, which is the final tashahhud, since the tashahhud the imam performed before those two prostrations is not counted. Given the long interval between the imam’s taslim and the repetition of the final tashahhud, it is upon
the imam and the worshippers to repeat the prayer in its entirety from the beginning. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
