The ruling on supplication after prayer, and reciting al-Fatihah after the tasbih following prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
From the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, one of the listening brothers sent a message saying: What is the ruling on supplication after prayer? Do we do it, or do we not? And what is the ruling on reciting al-Fatihah after concluding the prayer with the tasbih? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
Supplication is prescribed, but the best is to do it at the end of the prayer, before the taslim. This is the best. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) encouraged supplication at the end of the prayer. When he taught them the tashahhud (the greetings), he said:
Then he may choose any supplication which pleases him most and recite it.ثم ليتخير من الدعاء أعجبه إليه؛ فيدعو
Bulugh al-Maram 2:203
And in the other wording:
Then he may choose any supplication which pleases him.ثم ليختر من المسألة ما شاء
Sahih Muslim 402b
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate at the end of the prayer, before the taslim. This is the best. And among the prescribed supplications is: (O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You in the best manner) after saying: (I seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the Hellfire, from the punishment of the grave, from the trial of life and death, and from the trial of the Dajjal).
And among the prescribed supplications in the prayer, in the prostration, at the end of the prayer, is: (O Allah, I have wronged myself greatly, and no one forgives sins except You; so forgive me a forgiveness from You, and have mercy on me, for You are the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful). It is established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked by al-Siddiq about a supplication to make in his prayer, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
Allahumma inni zalumtu nafsi zulman kathiran, Wala yaghfiru dh-dhunuba illa anta, fa ghfir li maghfiratan min `indika, wa r-hamni, innaka anta l-ghafuru r-rahim (O Allah! I have done great injustice to myself and none except You forgives sins, so bestow on me a forgiveness from You, and Have Mercy on me, You are the Forgiver, the Merciful).قل: اللهم إني ظلمت نفسي ظلمًا كثيرًا، ولا يغفر الذنوب إلا أنت؛ فاغفر لي مغفرة من عندك، وارحمني إنك أنت الغفور الرحيم
Sahih al-Bukhari 834
.
This great supplication is made: in the prostration... at the end of the prayer... between the two prostrations. It is all good, a great supplication. And likewise: (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice, and I seek refuge in You from being returned to the worst of age, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of this world, and from the punishment of the grave). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate with this at the end of the prayer.
And likewise: (O Allah, forgive me what I have done before and what I have delayed, what I have kept secret and what I have made public, what I have exaggerated, and what You know better than I. You are the One who brings forward and the One who delays, there is no god but You). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also used to supplicate with this in the prayer, at its end. If one supplicates with something other than this, there is no harm. And if one supplicates after the dhikr, after the salam, with supplications between him and Allah, there is no harm either. But he starts with the dhikr, seeks forgiveness three times when he says the salam, then says: (O Allah, You are Peace and from You comes peace, Blessed are You, O Owner of Majesty and Honor). Then he remembers Allah, saying: (There is no god but Allah alone, without partner, to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs the praise, and He is over all things competent. There is no power and no strength except by Allah. There is no god but Allah, and we worship none but Him. To Him belongs the blessing and to Him belongs the favor, and to Him belongs the good praise. There is no god but Allah, sincere to Him in our religion, even if the disbelievers dislike it). (O Allah, there is no one who can prevent what You have given, and there is no one who can give what You have prevented, and the wealth of the wealthy does not benefit him from You). After the midday prayer, after the afternoon prayer, after the sunset prayer, after the night prayer, after the dawn prayer, after the Friday prayer, all of this is a recommended practice.
And it is recommended to say with this: (Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, and Allah is the Greatest) thirty-three times, after this dhikr, after every prayer of the five prayers (Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, and Allah is the Greatest), thirty-three times. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught his Companions this, thirty-three times, and informed them that there is great virtue in this.
So it is recommended for every believer, male and female, after every prayer, and after the aforementioned dhikr, to say: Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, and Allah is the Greatest, thirty-three times. The total is ninety-nine. Then he completes the hundred by saying: (There is no god but Allah alone, without partner, to Him belongs the dominion, and to Him belongs the praise, and He is over all things competent). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed that this is among the causes of forgiveness.
And it is recommended for him to recite with this the Verse of the Throne, after every prayer, after the salam and after this dhikr:
Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existenceاللَّهُ لا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ
[Al-Baqarah 2:255]
... to His saying:
and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.وَلا يَئُودُهُ حِفْظُهُمَا وَهُوَ الْعَلِيُّ الْعَظِيمُ
[al-Baqarah:255]. And he recites:
Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One,قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ
[al-Ikhlas:1] and the two protectors also after every prayer, it is recommended, and he repeats them three times after the sunset and dawn prayers,
Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One,قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ
[al-Ikhlas:1] ...
Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreakقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ
[al-Falaq:1] ...
Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ
[al-Nas:1]. It is recommended to repeat them three times after the dawn and sunset prayers, and at sleep, it is a recommended practice. As for after the midday, afternoon, and night prayers, once. All of this is recommended. The believer, male and female, should strive to do this in his prayers, because of the great good in it.
As for al-Fatihah, it is not prescribed to recite it after the prayer. It has not been reported that it is recited after the prayer (Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds). We do not know in the authentic hadiths anything indicating that it is recited after the prayer. May Allah guide them all. Yes.

The presenter : O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.
