He says: On a Friday, I entered the mosque to pray, and the imam stood up to deliver the sermon. One of the worshippers entered the mosque, prayed the greeting of the mosque, then sat down next to me and greeted me by shaking my hand.

The questioner : He says: On a Friday, I entered the mosque to pray, and the imam stood up to deliver the sermon. One of the worshippers entered the mosque, prayed the greeting of the mosque, then sat down next to me and greeted me by shaking my hand while the imam was delivering the sermon. Is it my right to shake his hand and return his greeting, or should I act according to the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)
Whoever touches pebbles has engaged in idle talk من مس الحصا فقد لغى
Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 4:35
And whoever engages in idle talk has no Friday prayer ومن لغى فلا جمعة له
? I nodded to him, and after the imam finished the sermon, I greeted him, apologized to him, and informed him of the hadith. Is the hadith authentic or weak? And is the truth with me in what I did?

The Shaykh : When a person arrives while the imam is delivering the sermon on Friday, he should pray two light rak'ahs and sit down, and he should not greet anyone. Greeting people in this situation is forbidden, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If you say to your companions: ‘Be quiet’ on a Friday while the Imam is delivering the sermon, you have engaged in Laghw (idle talk or behaviour). إذا قلت لصاحبك: أنصت يوم الجمعة والإمام يخطب فقد لغوت
Sunan Ibn Majah 1110Sahih (Darussalam)
He also said:
Whoever touches pebbles has engaged in idle talk من مس الحصا فقد لغى
Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 4:35
"Al-Laghi" means one who has engaged in some idle talk. This idle talk may cause one to lose the reward of the Friday prayer. Therefore, it is mentioned in the hadith:
And whoever chatters has no Friday prayer for him. ومن لغا فلا جمعة له
Musannaf Abd al-Razzaq 4:271
.
If someone greets you, do not return the greeting with words. Do not say, "And upon you be peace," even if he says it with words. As for shaking his hand, there is no harm in it, although it is better not to shake hands and instead to nudge him so that he realizes that this is not a place for handshakes, because handshaking involves a type of play that may distract a person from fully listening to the sermon. What you did by alerting him when the sermon ended that this is not something that should be done is good. I wish there were many like you, because some people are ignorant of this matter and return the greeting, or perhaps they lose it and leave it and boycott him, and do not inform him when the preacher finishes why he did this. However, some scholars have said that it is permissible to return the greeting, but the correct view is that it is not permissible to return the greeting, because the obligation to listen takes precedence over the obligation to return the greeting. Furthermore, the person who greets in this situation has no right to greet, because that distracts people from what they are obligated to listen to. Therefore, the correct ruling is that there is no returning of the greeting and no initiating of the greeting while the imam is delivering the sermon.
