Instructing the deceased after burial

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q2: After the burial of one of the deceased, an elderly man who follows the school of Imam Malik came to us and sat facing the face of the deceased. He said: “O Abdullah ibn Wadha , O Abdullah ibn Wadha , O Abdullah ibn Wadha ,” three times. Then he said: “Remember the covenant by which you left the world: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and that Paradise is true and the Fire is true, and that Allah resurrects those in the graves.” He mentioned some words after that, not many. So I asked him: “Is what you do a Sunnah?” He said: “Yes.” My question, O honorable Shaykh: Is instructing the deceased after burial in this manner a established Sunnah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and is it to be denounced for whoever does it, or not?
A2: Instructing the deceased after burial is not established by any evidence from the Book of Allah, nor by any authentic Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), nor by the practice of his Rightly Guided Caliphs.
Rather, the prescribed instruction is instructing the dying person before his death with the word of tawhid (the oneness of Allah): (La ilaha illa Allah); based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
‘Urge your dying ones to say La ilaha illallah.”لقنوا موتاكم لا إله إلا الله
Sunan Ibn Majah 1444Sahih (Darussalam)
. It was narrated by Muslim in his Sahih. The intended meaning of “the dead” here is the dying, as the scholars clarified in their explanation of this hadith. And what is prescribed for us after burying the deceased is to stand at his grave and seek forgiveness from Allah for him, and ask Allah for steadfastness for him, as was reported from Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
when the Prophet finished the burial of the dead he stood over it and said, “Ask forgiveness for your brother, then ask that he may be strengthened, for he is now being questioned."كان النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - إذا فرغ من دفن الميت وقف عليه فقال : استغفروا لأخيكم واسألوا له التثبيت فإنه الآن يسأل
Mishkat al-Masabih 133Isnād Hasan (Zubair `Aliza'i)
. It was narrated by Abu Dawud , and al-Hakim , and he graded it as authentic.
