How a sick person performs the prayer

Fatwa No. ( 15268 )
Q: I am an elderly woman, and I have been unable to move from the bed I have been sitting on for ten years. I am seeking a ruling regarding prayer and fasting for three months: one month in which I neither pray nor fast, and two months in which I fast two days each month. I have asked about this, and they told me: Do not fast while you are in this condition.
A : First: You must pray according to your ability, standing. If you cannot, then sitting. If you cannot, then on your side. If you cannot, then lying on your back with your feet facing the qiblah; based on the saying of Allah (Mighty and Majestic):
So fear Allah as much as you are ableفَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ
[At-Taghabun 64:16]
, and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to one of the sick who asked him:
offer prayer in standing condition; if you are unable to do so, then in sitting condition: if you are then at your sideصل قائمًا، فإن لم تستطع فقاعدًا، فإن لم تستطع فعلى جنب، فإن لم تستطع فمستلقًا
Sunan Abi Dawud 952Sahih (Al-Albani)
, and if you pray on your side, do so on your right side so that your face is toward the qiblah.
Second: As for the month in which you left off prayer, if that leaving off was due to the loss of your mind, then you owe nothing. If it was due to ignorance or illness, then you must make up the missed prayers at any time, with haste to do so. Third: You must perform wudu with water if you are able to do so, even with the help of one of your sons or other mahrams or women. You must also perform istinja with water from excrement and urine, or perform istijmar with stones or tissues three times or more. This suffices in place of water if cleanliness and purity are achieved thereby. If you cannot perform wudu, then you must perform tayammum, which is striking the earth with your hands and then wiping your face and palms with it. You must order those around you to bring earth to your bed so that you can use it when needed. You may combine the prayers of Dhuhr and Asr, either bringing them forward or delaying them, and combine the prayers of Maghrib and Isha, either bringing them forward or delaying them, like other sick people. Fourth: You must make up the days you broke your fast in Ramadan if you are able to do so, along with feeding a poor person for each day of the days you delayed making up from the Ramadan before the year 1412 AH, if you are able to do so. If you cannot afford to feed them due to your poverty, then fasting suffices for you, and praise be to Allah. If you cannot fast due to old age, then you must feed a poor person for each day; and that is
half a sa' of wheat, rice, or other staple food of the country. It suffices to give this to one poor person. If you are unable to feed them, it is dropped from you; based on the evidence mentioned earlier in the first point. You must fast in the future. If you are unable due to old age, then feed a poor person for each day. It suffices to give this to one poor person or more at the beginning, middle, or end of the month. We ask Allah for help and success for us and for you. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
