The third question of Fatwa No. ( 21587 )
Q 3: Is it permissible for a man to wash his mother or father while they are alive if they fall ill,
or when one of them dies, and likewise, is it permissible for a woman to wash her mother or father?

A: 3:If a woman dies, women wash her, and men do not wash her, neither her son nor anyone else, except her husband, for it is permissible for him to wash his wife; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saidto 'A'ishah(may Allah be pleased with her):
If I had died before you, I would have washed youلو مت قبلي لغسلتك
, and because'Ali(may Allah be pleased with him) washedFatimah(may Allah be pleased with her), and if a man dies, men wash him, and it is not permissible for a woman to wash him, neither his mother nor anyone else, except his wife, for it is permissible for her to wash her husband; because Asma' bint 'Umayys (may Allah be pleased with her) washed her husbandAbu Bakr(may Allah be pleased with him) when he instructed her to do so. As for a living sick person, whether the father or the mother, it is permissible for each of them to wash the other, provided that the 'awrah (part of the body that must be covered) is covered and not touched without a barrier between the hand and the body behind the covering. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
