Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The second question of Fatwa number ( 19627 )
Q 2: What is the ruling on praying over the funeral after it has been buried, after the 'Asr prayer? Is there anything that prevents praying over it after 'Asr and before burial, or after burial? We wish for you to remove the difficulty from our hearts.
A 2 : If one misses the prayer over the deceased, it is recommended for him to pray over him in the cemetery, placing the grave between himself and the qiblah, and this is valid up to one month from the burial; based on what Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated, saying:
Abu Huraira said that a negress (or a youth) used to sweep the mosque. God’s messenger missed her, and when he asked about her (or him) the people told him he had died. He asked why they had not informed him, and it appeared as if they had treated her (or him) as of little account. He asked the people to lead him to the grave, and when they did so he prayed over herإن امرأة سوداء كانت تقم المسجد ففقدها النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فسأل عنها فقالوا: ماتت، قال: أفلا آذنتموني؟ دلوني على قبرها، فدلوه فصلى عليها
Mishkat al-Masabih 1659
. It is agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. And based on what Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib narrated:
That the mother of Sa'd died while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was absent, so when he returned, he prayed over her, and a month had passed since her death.أن أم سعد ماتت والنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم غائب، فلما قدم صلى عليها وقد مضى لذلك شهر
, narrated by al-Tirmidhi and its narrators are trustworthy. Imam Ahmad said: The most I have heard for this is one month. If it exceeds that by a day or two, there is no harm in it. But after this period, one does not pray over him; rather, he makes du'a' for him and asks Allah for his forgiveness. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
