The Dispersal of Muslims in the Friday Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 18546 )
Q: The city of ( Guarulhos ), located near ( São Paulo ) International Airport in Brazil , has a population of approximately (1,500,000) and (130) Muslim families. There is a mosque near the Islamic cemetery neighborhood , which can accommodate up to (500) worshippers. We hold the Friday prayer there, and the number of worshippers reaches (55) on regular days, and up to (200) on festival days. About 600 meters away, there is a recreational club where some members perform the Friday prayer, with a number of worshippers reaching (15 or 20). So, in which of the two places is it better to perform the Friday prayer? The main mosque, which was built more than twenty years ago and where prayer is held continuously, or the club , which was built less than three years ago.
A: It is obligatory for you all to perform the Friday prayer and the five daily prayers together in the mosque, as much as possible; because the gathering of Muslims is required, increasing the number in prayer is better, and dispersal is prohibited, and prayers are performed in the mosques built for them.
Allah the Exalted said:
in mosques which Allah has ordered to be raised and that His name be mentioned therein; exalting Him within them in the morning and the evenings (37) [Are] men whom neither commerce nor sale distracts from the remembrance of Allah and performance of prayer and giving of zakahفِي بُيُوتٍ أَذِنَ اللَّهُ أَنْ تُرْفَعَ وَيُذْكَرَ فِيهَا اسْمُهُ يُسَبِّحُ لَهُ فِيهَا بِالْغُدُوِّ وَالآصَالِ (36) رِجَالٌ لاَ تُلْهِيهِمْ تِجَارَةٌ وَلاَ بَيْعٌ عَنْ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَإِقَامِ الصَّلاَةِ وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ
[An-Nur 24:36-37]
, and Allah the Exalted said:
The mosques of Allah are only to be maintained by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day and establish prayer and give zakah and do not fear except Allahإِنَّمَا يَعْمُرُ مَسَاجِدَ اللَّهِ مَنْ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ وَأَقَامَ الصَّلاَةَ وَآتَى الزَّكَاةَ وَلَمْ يَخْشَ إِلا اللَّهَ
[At-Tawbah 9:18]
, and He the Exalted said:
O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.
[Al-Jumu'ah 62:9]
, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever hears the call for prayer and and does not come (to the mosque for prayer), his prayer will not be accepted from him, unless he has a (legitimate) excuse.من سمع النداء فلم يأت فلا صلاة له إلا من عذر
Bulugh al-Maram 2:308
It was narrated by Ibn Majah and al-Daraqutni and Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim , and Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was asked about the excuse, and he said: (fear or illness), and there are many hadiths in this meaning. So, you must maintain unity and agreement, and beware of division and disagreement. May Allah guide everyone to what is good and right. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
