The second question of Fatwa No. ( 14695 )
Q2: We used to pray in congregation in a mosque, and the imam who used to pray with us had previously prayed 'Isha' and gave us the benefit of his prayer, so we followed him. After a period of time,
another group came and joined us in the prayer. When they learned that the imam had already prayed and that this was a voluntary prayer for him, they repeated their prayer, but we did not repeat it. Is our prayer valid or invalid, and what should we do, and what should our companions who repeated the prayer do?
A2: It is permissible for one who has prayed the obligatory prayer to lead those who have not prayed the obligatory prayer; it is a voluntary prayer for him and an obligatory prayer for the followers. This is based on what Muslim narrated in his *Sahih* from Jabir ibn 'Abdullah that Mu'adh used to pray with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and then return to pray that prayer with his people. And Abu Dawud and others narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding the man who missed the congregation:Sahih Ibn Hibban 10:694 . This indicates the validity of the voluntary prayer behind one who is praying the obligatory, and the validity of the obligatory prayer behind one who is praying the voluntary. Accordingly, your prayer is valid and it is not obligatory for you to repeat it, nor for those who joined you during the prayer. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
