Q: The imam of our mosque is also the mu'adhdhin, and he performs the imamah and the adhan excellently, and we do not praise anyone above Allah. However, he hastens with the adhan, especially in Ramadan, and at many times. When he hears the announcer say, "Now the microphone is being switched to al-Masjid al-Haram ," he rushes to give the adhan and does not wait until al-Masjid al-Haram gives the adhan. We told him this, and he said: "The sun sets five minutes before the adhan of al-Masjid al-Haram, and I have witnessed this on the sea many times, and others with me." He cited the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), which means:Sahih al-Bukhari 1954 and other narrations regarding hastening to break the fast. We ask you to inform us of the correct ruling, and we thank you.
A: It is not permissible for the aforementioned mu'adhdhin to perform the adhan based on the announcer's statement: "Now the microphone is being switched to al-Masjid al-Haram "; because this is not an announcement of the beginning of the adhan, but rather a notification of its approach. The aforementioned mu'adhdhin is not permitted to give the adhan for the time except by his own knowledge of the entry of the time of the obligatory prayer, according to its known time prescribed by the Shari'ah. It is permissible for him, if he is in Makkah and the adhan of
al-Masjid al-Haram is being broadcast live on that day, to give the adhan upon hearing it, trusting that he is performing the adhan in its time. It is not permissible for him to begin the adhan before that. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
