Fatwa No. ( 20406 )
Q: I am a married woman, twenty years old. My menstrual period used to be delayed from one month to four months , and it did not come on time (this was before marriage). This condition has continued with me for a year in this state, until after my last intercourse with my husband, when blood came out of me, and it was red mixed with white. This blood continued with me for a week, so I assumed it was my menstrual period. Then I stopped praying. Then blood came out of me that was brown like dirt, and it continued with me for ten days. I doubted the matter and went to the hospital and had a pregnancy test done,
and the result came out that there was no pregnancy. After that, blood came out of me that was dark red, and it continued with me for twenty days. I want you to know that this is the first time this has happened to me. Today, O Shaykh, I have been in this state for thirty-one days, and I have not been praying. I want you to know that I still have light and very little blood with me. The question is, O honorable Shaykh: Is this blood menstrual blood, or is it irregular bleeding? Do I pray or not? What do I do about the prayers I missed, of which I have missed many? And finally, what is irregular bleeding ? May Allah reward you with the best reward for the Muslims.
A : If the reality is as you described, then you must leave off prayer for the number of days of your usual custom that comes to you every month only. As for what is beyond that, you must purify yourself and pray, and protect yourself with something that prevents the blood from coming out during prayer, until the time of the second period arrives. This is how the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded the women with irregular bleeding. It is also obligatory for you to perform the ablution for every prayer after its time has entered, if the blood is coming out of you continuously. And you must make up the prayers you left off during the days other than your usual custom. We ask Allah for you assistance, success, and healing from all evil. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
