Fatwa number ( 14876 )
Q: Is it permissible for a person in a state of major ritual impurity to walk with the funeral procession and pray over the deceased, using dry ablution? Knowing that if he went to perform ritual purity, he would miss the congregation for the funeral prayer? And what is the ruling for one who has previously followed the funeral procession and prayed over the deceased using dry ablution while in a state of major ritual impurity?
A : Ritual purity is a condition for the validity of the funeral prayer, and it is not valid
to perform dry ablution for it when water is available and one is able to use it. If he is unable to pray over the deceased with the congregation, he should pray over his grave after burial, provided that a month has not passed since the burial. As for walking with the funeral procession while in a state of major ritual impurity, there is nothing wrong with that. As for your previous act of praying over the funeral with dry ablution while water was available, you must seek forgiveness for that. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
