Has one who says, "I will not eat this food," forbidden it to himself?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Does everyone who says, "I will not eat this food," and specifies a particular type of food, thereby forbid it to himself?

The Shaykh : Meaning, has he forbidden it to himself?

The questioner : Yes, that is correct.

The Shaykh : This depends on the intention. If by saying, "I will not eat this food," he intends to forbid it to himself, then it is a prohibition. It is well known that when the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I will not eat honey," he intended to restrain himself from it. So this is a prohibition. And for forbidding what Allah has made lawful, the expiation for an oath is sufficient. Yes.
