The fifth question of Fatwa No. ( 19497 )
Q 5: What is your opinion of one who says: that no prohibition has come from the predecessors, such as the Imams and others, regarding trimming what exceeds a fistful of the beard , while you say it is forbidden? Some say: that the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding those who dye with black in the last of time. That this hadith does not contain an explicit prohibition, but rather this is their description: that they dye with black, regardless of the hadith . And is it from imitating the disbelievers for women to dye their hair with yellow and others, excluding black?
A 5: Whoever says: that no prohibition has come from the early Imams regarding trimming what exceeds a fistful of the beard - his statement is refuted and has no standing, and he has erred in this and contradicted the guidance of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the command to let the beard grow and the prohibition of taking anything from it. What indicates this is what is established in (the two Sahihs) from
Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sahih al-Bukhari 5892 , and in (Sahih Muslim ) also from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 260 , and by his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. Letting the beard grow and hanging it down means leaving it in its state, and preserving it means keeping it full without shaving, plucking, or trimming anything from it. The command to let the beard grow necessitates obligation. It is not established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he used to take from the width of his beard or its length, or trim what exceeds a fistful, and there is no standing for one who contradicts this, for the criterion is what is authentic from Allah or His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). As for one who says: that the hadith: Sunan Abi Dawud 4212Sahih (Al-Albani) does not contain an explicit prohibition against dyeing with black, but rather this is their description that they dye with black, then this statement is false and has no standing; due to the authenticity of the hadiths coming regarding the prohibition of dyeing with black and the command to avoid it generally; for what Abu Dawud narrated through his chain from Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) he said: Mishkat al-Masabih 4424 and it was narrated by Muslim and al-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah . And for what Ahmad narrated in (his Musnad) and Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan Abi Dawud 4212Sahih (Al-Albani) So when they deserved this warning, that indicated the prohibition of their action, and the obligation to avoid it. Accordingly, it is recommended to change the gray hair with something other than black, such as henna and katam, which gives the hair a redness or yellowness or the like; for what Muslim narrated that Abu Bakr dyed with henna and katam, and that 'Umar dyed with henna, and for what came that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to dye with yellow. As for women dyeing their hair with yellow and others, such as henna and katam, excluding black, there is no harm in it, rather it is recommended to change the whiteness of gray hair. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
