Hanging Pictures
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I am a lecturer at the College of Teachers in al-Jawf , and this year I have been appointed head of the Department of Islamic Studies at the college. You know, may Allah preserve you, that attending the college council meetings is an administrative duty entailed by heading the department, and that is how it has been. However, the matter in which I seek your guidance and fatwa is that the college council meeting hall contains enlarged painted portraits of King 'Abd al-'Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him). You know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan Ibn Majah 3649Sahih (Darussalam). The hadith is explicit and clear. Here I mention to your eminence that I am able to decline the headship of
the department, and that although there is a benefit to my colleagues in my heading it, there is no great harm resulting from leaving it. Also, I do not intend to continue attending a council that the angels do not attend. So what do you rule for me? May Allah guide you and protect you, and may Allah reward you with good.
A: Hanging pictures of living beings is not permissible. However, if your remaining as head of the department results in a benefit in spreading good and reducing evil, then continue, while disapproving of the hanging of pictures, even if only in your heart if you are unable to do more than that.
The angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or an image.
